10 Useful Facts Every Woman Should Know

I've never understood a couple of things. One: Why don't women embrace being women. That means we aren't men, are unique and how amazing is that? Two: Why don't we support each other more? We're all women, we all go through a list of the same issues, we're all struggling in similar ways. Geez, band together and raise each other up.

10 Facts Every Woman Should Know;

1. Everyone has rolls when they bend over.
2. When someone tells you that you're beautiful, believe them. They aren't lying.
3. S…

Don't Assume That I Have It All Together

Recently on a run, a friend asked me for parenting advice. The timing was interesting since - on this particular run - I was internally decompressing about my own parenting. Having 9 teenagers in the home makes life fun and interesting, it keeps me young and ages me. People comment often: "I don't know how you do it and stay sane!", "You have such a big heart!", "You have it so together!". Bull. Who says I'm sane, have a big heart, or have anything together? People assume an awful lot. Kids don'…

Learning to Embrace Adventures of Life

That elusive someday. Always putting off the things we "want" to do for the things we "have" to do. I recently watched the movie Paper Towns with several of the teenagers and it was a great conversation starter.

"Would you be mad if we took your car for a 2-3 day road trip without asking?" Yes, but I want you to have great adventures so that's a tough one. "Who is right? the girl or the boy?" Both. The boy plays everything safe and the girl wants all of life to be an adventure. It's great whe…

An Unconventional Christmas

It was an unconventional Christmas for my family this year. Not what most would consider minimalistic but not entirely commercial either. We shot for a balance somewhere in between and (I think) came out well in the end. Our children are all getting older and although I wanted to take a family trip this year like we did last year, the kids asked for something different. They wanted a more "traditional" Christmas with presents, but most of the lists were practical.

There is No Best Way to Raise Kids

With eighteen kids under my belt, I can tell those of you looking for the One Best Way To Raise Kids - there IS no one best way.  Just like all of us adults have unique personalities, so do our kiddos who come wired with a personality we sometimes feel is familiar and sometimes have no clue where they came from.  Little alien's we're supposed to raise by doing all the right things the right ways.  The best way doesn't exist and neither does the manual. I'm far from perfect.  I raise my voice too…

The Relationship Benefits of Date Night

There are so many benefits to date night. It is imperative in a relationship with kids.  I look forward to Saturday night and I won't lie, it's on a countdown some weeks.  We have some rules about date night.  No discussing our relationship and no discussing the kids.  This is both a relief and a challenge, but date night is about us tapping into each other, focusing on each other, feeling special and important, and getting away from the issues that cause stress.  It's not only about staying in …

Teaching Kids About Consumerism

Teaching kids about consumerism can be a big task.  Regardless of your income or your priorities, it's an issue parents have to face.  No matter how often you succumb to "the gimmies", there will always be more.  Commercials on TV, ads on the internet, friends who own more "stuff", the ability for social media to track what you look for and like - it's never-ending.

Want to be thinner?  Faster?  Stronger?  Better looking? Have more energy?  Look better?  There's a product for everything and…

Parenting with Multiple Kids

I've heard of this concept like a tall tale. I've been a Mommy for 23 1/2 years now and parenting with multiple kids in the house has been an experience. I haven't had "only" three kids in over 16 years and I admit I have no clue how to cook for just 5 people.  I lost count of how many years I had 3 kids in diapers and although breastfeeding is becoming a distant memory, I did it for 11 years.  There was a period of time I felt like I was always pregnant and when people ask me how I did it back …

How To Screw Up Your Kids Without Even Trying

I am a parent. To a lot of kids. I'm really trying not to screw these kids up! It's crazy, insane, what were you thinking, are you an idiot amount of kids. 18 to be precise. Biological, step, adopted. You name it, I've got them. It's the most dysfunctional, motley group of people who seemingly came from everywhere and formed a lopsided, lumpy group and called ourselves a family. Some people collect thimbles, I collected my family.

It's not like there was an architectural blueprint when I star…

Family Christmas Alternatives

Last year at about this time, our kids approached us and asked if we could replace Christmas.  They asked for a family trip and no presents.  NO PRESENTS!  When most of your kids are teenagers, and they'd rather spend time with you than money on them, you take stock. This might be the perfect time for a family Christmas alternative.

I stressed myself out financially, emotionally and although the tree was filled with lovely gifts, the feeling I had on Christmas morning was one of being disconn…
