The Relationship Benefits of Date Night

There are so many benefits to date night. It is imperative in a relationship with kids.  I look forward to Saturday night and I won't lie, it's on a countdown some weeks.  We have some rules about date night.  No discussing our relationship and no discussing the kids.  This is both a relief and a challenge, but date night is about us tapping into each other, focusing on each other, feeling special and important, and getting away from the issues that cause stress.  It's not only about staying in …

Cherish Your BFF

At this point in my life, I feel surrounded by positive, strong, really amazing people.

Some, though, just click and connect a little more than the average.  I wrote a post HERE about my friend Diana and the subject is back. Diana was treated for thyroid cancer and, although it'll be a process and some time, things are looking great.  She wears her scars like a badge of honor and she was as aggressive as she could be against a word that elicits fear.  Through it all, she kept me posted, whic…

The Importance of Best Friends

I know the importance of best friends.

Sometimes you get lucky and find a best friend.

Someone you can tell ANYTHING to and they just get you.

Besties

I am blessed to have several very close friends.  I am more blessed to have a couple of best friends.  They are few and far between.  A person you connect within your soul.  Like finding a missing piece of the puzzle.  Diana is one of my very bestest friends ever.

We should go to a photo booth and take silly pictures because that's how I feel wh…

When One Door Closes - Finding a New Beginning

I did not expect to date again for a long time.  I was spending time contentedly alone and had determined that's how it would remain until the kids got quite a bit older.  With over a decade of foster care under my belt I have learned that I should never say I am done with "having" children but they were certainly no longer expected.  But I digress....

I don't NEED a relationship to feel good about myself or "complete".  But I do WANT someone in my life - a partner, friend, confidant, lover. …

Liberate Yourself by Opening Up

As my kids have gotten older, it's been interesting how the relationship changes as they begin to see me as something other than their Mommy. I'm a woman, a sister, a daughter, a friend, a hard worker, a wife. As we all are, I am many facets, but not all are shown to any one person. People may "know" me, but in reality, they know very little.  Being an extrovert and enjoying connecting with people has taught me the art of sharing much while sharing very little.  Perhaps a way to connect but not …

Three Things That Will Give You a Chuckle

I'm feeling particularly spicy today. In a mood. Ornery. Piss and vinegar. Funny. (or so I'd like to think)....  Here are things that make me laugh... Hard.  By myself.  I need more hobbies.

My daughter is struggling in school. Not because she isn't smart, she just isn't motivated. I saw this, saved it and showed it to her. Then reminded her to get her grades up. I'm mother of the year.

My daughter is struggling in school. Not because she isn't smart, she just isn't motivated. 9th grade does suck. I saw this, saved it, and showed it to her. Then reminded her to get her grades up. I'm the mother of the year. At least she noticed school is spelled wrong.

13 kids. 7 adopted. Sometimes when they were little - years ago now - I felt a little like this...

My Kids Rock My World!

I've dragged brought my kids to races for years.  They've (all but one) run at least one 5K per year for years.  They've crewed me on my long runs so that I had aid stations - having an older child who drives is awesome for that.  Pretty much, they know the drill of being a runner and supporting runners.  They're good at it, they like doing it, they're enthusiastic, they know what they like on a run.

So when my coach announced he was looking for groups to run aid stations at the first run in h…

Weight Training Like A Beast

My daughter Bri is training for fitness competitions and joined a gym. She got me a 7 day pass so today I went for the first time with her and told her she was in charge. We had a great time, got in an awesome workout, and laughed like crazy. We did shoulders and triceps but the entire time said, "Every day is chest and biceps!!!" and things like, "I'm getting swoll!!" (no, that's not a real word....)

I did fitness competitions just over 7 years ago and although I enjoyed being on stage, I don…

Interviews with Bloggers

I love to write this blog.  It's cathartic.  It's an outlet.  It's just fun.  I track my statistics, but honestly, that's not the best barometer of what people think.  On a Thursday night after a trail run (that I was late to due to my daughter's appointment) a young man introduced himself to me letting me know he found me via my blog and lives here in Reno.  What a thrill!!!  We've gotten to know each other much better since then which has been a true pleasure.  Here is our email conversation a…

When Running Sometimes Wrong Turns Can Turn Out Just Right

I get lost. Not just a little. Hopelessly, desperately, completely lost. Often. I try to put it off as "endearing" - isn't it cute, bless her heart, she's so pretty sort of endearing - although I know it's not. No matter what I've tried, I still get lost. Regularly.  In my own town.  On Sunday morning runs with a group we all separate relatively quickly based on speed and distance and I have to be able to see someone even though I'm holding the directions in my hand and they are completely accur…
