Mom's Running It Blog

Mom Chronicles: Samuel at almost 9

"I don't like running a lot. I do the half mile. I like that. I get a race number put on. I like hamburgers and eating hotdogs. I really like to help my Mom cook. I like to help her make hamburgers. I like to ride my bike when my Mom runs." Samuel.  He's a boy of few words.  He's sometimes too much of a prankster and laughs when I discipline him.  You can imagine how happy that makes me.  He's the most shy of all the kids, the baby despite my efforts to NOT have the last child be the "baby".  H…

Adoption Story: Kezia, Finding Joy After Hardship

"I like spending time with my Mom because she's active and she helps us learn stuff that's active and she runs a lot with me. And I like to run with my Mom because she does a lot of fun things when she runs and she lets us ride our bikes when she's running. She makes jokes, waits for us, laughs at silly things we do. I also like spending time with my Mom because she is really nice and we do a lot of activities together like sewing, wakeboarding, running and ride bikes. And cooking. We eat a lot…

Mom Chronicles: Ashlea at 11

"I like that we don't have fast food all the time. Mommy cooks homemade a lot. My favorite thing to cook with her are her sugar cookies. I like when Mommy does long runs and we meet her about 3 miles before the end and ride our bikes. And when we help crew her when she does really long runs. I like when we meet at the end of a race. My favorite run was the 5K Run For Education that we did every year. Me and Gabi ran together and met Mom and the older kids at the end." Ashlea is the one that won…

Mom Chronicles: Gabrielle at 10

"My mom runs with me and my family. Once when we were running I got a side cramp. She told me to raise my arm and press my stomach and breathe really deeply. She told me it was carbon dioxide trapped in my diaphragm. We walked together while I had the cramp and when it didn't get better she told me to turn around to start back home. She turned back around and walked with me. We walked to my brothers to help them with the bike. She told me that we would at least run 2.3 miles instead of the 3 th…

Running and Halloween: All About the Costumes

This blog began when I signed 8 of my kids up for a Halloween 5K this year. Taking running clothes, adding costumes so it's fun and comfortable can be challenging. I came up with some pretty good ideas, however upon doing more research I realized I'm not even close to being the most creative. www.anothermotherrunner.com released one of their free podcasts for AMR radio specifically for fun, creative, easy to make Halloween costumes.  Featured on the show was one of the women from www.team-sparkl…

Prepped and Ready for My Next Half Marathon

I'm training for a half marathon. Usually, I pick one, sign up (it's all about accountability), and then I have my date and my goal. I used to have a group I ran with at my old job. When I lost the job, I lost my friends too, so now I train alone. Sometimes my husband or my kids jump in for 3 miles but for the most part I'm by myself. That's not as much fun as running with people or even a person but it's OK.  Running a race alone is a little more difficult. It's fun to share the event. If trave…

Choosing the Right Running Attire for the Weather

So clothing and running and temperatures.... I have a guideline which I think is what all of us pretty much do. I look at the weather online pre-run and then determine what I'm putting on. I always keep in mind that I should start feeling chilly if possible so I'm not stripping after ten minutes. I make sure I'm considering everything when I'm choosing the right running attire for the weather. Most running apparel is designed to be comfortable but there are a couple of things to consider. Person…

Running Quirks: Name that Run!

I "talk" to myself during a run. In my head. And I name things. My long run is every Tuesday morning. I run to work which is 8.1 miles. Now that I"m building back up to a half marathon, I'm using that run and adding loops to it to increase my mileage to 12. I did 9 this morning and next week will be 10, etc...  So the bulk of it is the same and I've named it all. Usually I like to run different routes to mix things up, but there's also comfort in knowing what to expect. I dislike the first coup…

Running Gear Reviews: A Few of My Favorite Things

One of the fantastic things about running - and there are a lot - is that it's a relatively inexpensive sport. Running can be done in nearly any weather and travels easily. A good pair of running shoes and supportive sports bra are probably the two biggest must-haves. That being said (and maybe especially because we're women) there are so many options to play with! Here are some of my favorites - through a lot of trial and error I might add - that have become personal fav's in my little running …

Running Shoe Review - Vibrams

I've had the Vibrams in my possession for weeks now, but was waiting for a 3-mile day. I didn't want to get out there doing 8 miles and have a problem. I've worn them a couple of times to do errands and hang out mostly to get used to putting them on, which stinks but I'm getting better at it. That went well but I had my reservations.

I knew I preferred wearing my toe socks as opposed to barefoot with them on and that they were comfortable. I'm not for or against the barefoot running movement s…
